GALEN

Lust.
My ultimate downfall,
And demise.
I’m shackled to a life I can’t escape.
A life I never asked for.

Now, I’m trapped–soulless,
Burdened by a Watcher lurking within.
He wants out, he wants her.
But I can’t let that happen,
Won’t let that happen.

She’s mine.

Somehow that doesn’t matter.
I can’t have what I crave.
What I want.
What I need.

As the Watcher fights me,
Battles for control,
I refuse to succumb.
It’s a power I’ll never relinquish.
I can’t unleash what lies beneath,
Without paying the ultimate price,
And losing her in the end.

TWO YEARS

Since my life changed for the second time and not necessarily for the better. Two years since I traded prison bars for streets and hunted a runaway who I’d met in an alley.

TWO DAYS

Since I forgot how to lie, woke to fists, and chased after the girl who’d been stolen from me.

TWO HOURS

To save her, rescue her, keep my lies intact. She looks at me full of hate. I look at her full of confession.

TWO MINUTES

For our relationship to switch from mutual dislike to floundering with unknowns. I’ve hurt her. Now, she’s hurt me. I guess we’re even.

TWO SECONDS

For her to listen, to see, to finally know who I am. The answer comes with hardship. The answer isn’t what she wants to hear.

TWO BREATHS

For me to walk out the door.

TWO HEARTBEATS

For it all to be over.

A BLONDE AT HEART

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Highland Yearning Highland Yearning _505x825

Dawn Ireland

Caden Mackay would never bed a Sutherland, let alone marry one. Bloody hell, what had possessed his twin brother to propose to one of the she-devils? And what is Caden to do with the Sutherland beauty who appears, as if by magic, in his library? The defiant intruder is the enemy, but she is unlike any woman Caden’s ever known, and her tantalizing curves and wide green eyes could tempt a monk. He must devise a way to stop the wedding. Ariel’s life had never gone the way she’d hoped, but ending up in eighteenth century Scotland was a stretch, even for her. But can she find her way back to her time, before her too-handsome Highlander makes her believe that love can conquer in any century?

Author Spotlight: Sarah Robinson

Today we are celebrating the release of Breaking a Legend by my fBreaking a Legend_Robinson-2riend Sarah Robinson. Sarah agreed to do an author spotlight interview, and share a bit about her new release!
So, Sarah, tell us a bit about what genre you like to write.

Mainly contemporary romance, but I have one series that is romantic suspense thriller. I’m also hoping to break into women’s fiction in the future!

I’ve got a women’s fiction book in the super early stages too. Why did you choose contemporary romance?

I’m not sure I really chose it, but more so just fell into it. I wrote the stories I loved and I believed in, only to find out later how they would specifically be categorized and what genre they fit in.

When did you start writing?

I’ve written my whole life, but mainly poetry and short stories. I wrote my first novel in 2013 and published it with a small press publisher that September. I’ve been writing ever since!

Do you have a backlist?

I do! I have six books published before this upcoming book, all of which were self published and can be found on my website. I have the romantic suspense thriller trilogy titled Tainted Bodies, Tainted Pictures, and lastly, Untainted. These three make up The Photographer Trilogy and have been by far my most successful, reaching #9 in Barnes & Noble total and #25 on Amazon. My second series is a rockstar contemporary romance series and also available on my website! My first traditionally published book is coming out 9/29/15 from Penguin Random House, titled BREAKING A LEGEND.All books on transparent background

That is so exciting! Can you give a brief synopsis of Breaking a Legend? As one of the big names at his family’s gym, Legends, MMA star Rory Kavanagh is used to being in the spotlight—until a gruesome leg injury knocks him out of the cage. Rory is left feeling sidelined in more ways than one, battling the inner demons that come with losing the one shot at his dreams. Then Clare walks into his life and gives him a new dream: winning her heart. There aren’t many new faces in Woodlawn these days, but this tough, beautiful stranger makes Rory want to get his life back into fighting shape.

Clare Ivers doesn’t think she’ll be able to tell anyone what really brought her to the close-knit Bronx neighborhood where she just started bartending. But her life’s on pause and her past is catching up fast, try as she might to move on—with new friends, steady work, and a chiseled alpha male trying to get her attention. Even though Rory’s more than a little intense, she can’t deny that her heart beats faster when he looks at her with those soulful silver eyes. Clare thought she was done with love, but Rory might just be man enough to show her she thought wrong.

Damn, that sounds right up my alley. I’m glad I already pre-ordered it. This is something I always ask any author I meet. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m somewhere in the middle. I build the skeleton of the story ahead of time, but then flesh it out as I go and it’s always a bit different than what I’d thought it’d be.

That’s really similar to my writing style too. Do you have a writing schedule?

I have a deadlines schedule, just meaning that this is the latest this book can be done by without my entire world falling apart and my editor sending me an angry emoticon. However, how and when I write before then is entirely all over the map. I try to write some every single day, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Where do you like to do most of your writing?

I’m most productive if I go to Starbucks, or the library, and write there. However, more often than not, I write on my couch at home with a ton of dogs and cats surrounding me.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

There are so many that it’s hard to pick just a few, so I know this list is going to be missing some. However, I adore Caroline Kepnes, Rachel van Dyken, Beth Flynn, Monica Murphy, Lauren Layne, and so many more!

I’m always looking for new book recommendations. What are you reading now?

I just finished reading The Bet by Rachel van Dyken (loved!), and am starting an arc for one of Lavinia Kent’s books! I read all the time, it’s one of my favorite things possible.

Do you get embarrassed when you hear your work read aloud?

Oh yeah, how can you not? When your words are said out loud, it never sounds the same as in your head. Our writing is so private, even though we share it publicly, but seeing it displayed loudly…. gosh. Cheeks are red!

Who would you like to see play your main characters in the movie version of your book?

I’m really not entirely sure, as I don’t think any actor/actress would be able to perfectly encompass who I picture Clare and Rory as in my head. Whoever played Rory would need to be intense with deep silver eyes, and Clare would need a slight blush and perfect confidence.

How do you get into your writing zone?

It’s usually not a big to-do, just pulling open my documents. I do make sure that my writing station is set up the way I want it first though. I need something to drink- water, wine, or coffee- and maybe something snacky. I’ll need very little clutter around, because I want to stay focused. I usually have a notebook nearby as well with a pen ready to jot down ideas or lists.

What advice do you have for fledgling writers?

First, decide that this is really what you want to do. There is no such thing as a part time successful author. Sure, there are always exceptions to every rule, but for the most part, if you want to be an author, you have to put every part of yourself into this. The hours are long and there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Now, if you decide that yes, you want this more than you’ve wanted anything else- then just remember that! Remember that you want this, that you’ll do anything to make it happen, and you won’t stop until you do. It’s that simple- never give up on your dreams.

Would you share an excerpt from Breaking a Legend?
“Whoa, watch where you’re going,” a gruff voice spoke and a hand suddenly gripped her wrist as she paraded directly into a brick wall.

At least it felt like a brick wall.

Shocked, her mouth parted slightly, she stared up into shining silver eyes that she recognized as belonging to Rory Kavanagh. Blushing, she stepped back, but he still held her arm in his large hand.

“Clare,” he acknowledged before she could respond.

“Oh, hi,” she awkwardly stammered as he released her, and she wrapped one arm around her waist, as if to hug herself.

“If you wanted to see me again, you could have just asked for my number the other night.” A cocky smile spread from ear to ear under his scruffy short beard.
“I figured stalking you and then plowing right into your chest would be a more memorable experience.” Clare grinned, still blushing as she tried her best to force away her nerves.

Author Spotlight: L.D. Rose

I’m excited to host L.D. Rose on my blog today so we can learn more about this awesome author!

Here’s a bit about her new release.

Releasing the Demons

Blaze Knight has been through hell and back, but the nightmares aren’t over yet.RELEASING THE DEMONS2_505x825 (2)

Five years after Blaze was maimed by Cyrus Chimola, a powerful vampire with a penchant for torture, he’s still trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. As a genetically engineered mercenary with the ability to bend fire to his will and to see in infrared, Blaze’s mission is to protect what’s left of humanity. When Chimola and his crew return to the Bronx gunning for Blaze’s blood, Blaze is forced to face the demons of his past. Hell-bent on revenge, he seeks the help of Valerie Medeiros, an NYPD detective who manages to steal his heart and save his life in more ways than one.

Motivated by her sister’s gruesome death, Valerie has made it her life’s goal to bury every vampire in the ground where they belong. When she brings in Blaze Knight for suspected murder, she discovers he’s not only innocent, he isn’t a man at all—he’s a half-vampire hybrid working with a band of brothers for the U.S. military. Valerie has a hard time trusting anything with fangs, yet she quickly falls headlong into Blaze’s life, a life full of darkness and horror she can’t even begin to fathom. The bodies are stacking up, but Valerie can’t seem to let go of this hybrid, a beautiful monster filled with pain, rage, and passion unlike anything she’s ever known.

In a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, Blaze and Valerie will find danger at every turn, risking everything they’ve come to know and love, including one another.

Hi, L.D. Thanks for being here. Awesome blurb. Let’s start off with a bit about what genre you write.

Paranormal romance, urban fantasy and horror (preferably all mixed together!)

Nice. Urban fantasy is such a cool genre because it can blend so many things into one. Why did you choose these genres?

I’ve been fascinated with monsters and the paranormal ever since I was a child, so naturally I read and wrote lots of dark fiction. Although I’d love to try my hand out at other genres someday (like medical suspense), I just really adore writing about things that go bump in the night. 😉

Oh, I love a good Paranormal, romance or otherwise. So, when did you start writing?

I’ve been writing for as long as I remember with my first “official” short story written on a typewriter at around age 10. It was called “The Secret Door” and it involved a haunted house with a portal to another dimension. I’ve never stopped since!

I used to type on a typewriter too. I had a love/hate relationship with it. Do you have a backlist? Would you share your links so we can “One-click” to our hearts’ content?

I’m part of an anthology by Fey Publishing called HORRORS OF HISTORY. My short story, PUBLIC ENEMIES, is about two depression-era gangsters who end up getting more than they bargained for during a bank heist (two words: zombie cops). I loved writing about these two and I hope to pen a novel about them in the future. 😉 http://amzn.com/061590100

So, tell me a bit about your newest work in progress.

BLACK BULLET, the second book of the Order of the Senary series.

Can we have a little synopsis? Just a peek?

I don’t want to give too much away yet, but it’s darker than the first novel, and involves the hero experiencing possession, recurrent nightmares, and fighting off the demon inside him, all while trying to save an alcoholic empath on a suicide mission to kill a monster who emotionally and physically ruined her. *takes a deep breath* That was one long sentence, LOL.

With such strong themes, you must need to really know where your character is coming from and where he is going. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Kind of a combination of both? Definitely more pantser than plotter and I keep a rolling outline as I write. It changes often though as the story unfolds. I know where the story starts and how it ends, but the middle is all a matter of the characters and their battles in my head.

I’m a stay at home mom with two kids in school, so my writing day depends on their schedules, do you have a writing schedule?

No, I just write whenever I can, wherever I can. I’m a doctor by day, so I’m a hardcore weekend and vacation warrior and I can occasionally steal a weeknight or two to myself. Let’s just say I don’t watch a whole lot of TV. 😛

Wow! You are busy. Where do you write? I’m kind of all over the place dependent on my mood.

Usually on my laptop in my living or dining room. I have a home office but for some reason it stresses me out, lol, so I tend to plop on the couch and tap away.

I get that. I’ve been influenced by all of my favorite authors. Who are some of yours?

Stephen King, J.R. Ward, the “old” Laurell K Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Chuck Wendig, Charlie Huston, Richard Kadrey, Jeaniene Frost, and Kim Harrison (just to name a few!). To be honest, I can’t name them all here—I have so many!

So many of those are my favorites too. I’ve read most of the J.R. Ward, Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and Kim Harrison is an all time favorite of mine. What are you reading now? I’m reading Releasing the Demons by, well, YOU!

MARK OF THE DEMON by Diana Rowland So far, so good!

I get totally embarrassed when I hear my words read back to me. Is it the same for you?

I haven’t heard it read aloud (yet) unless me talking to myself counts. 😉

Just wait until you start auditions for your audiobook! How about movie dreams, who do you see playing your main characters?

I’ve honestly had a lot of trouble with this! I think Ali Larter would make a great Valerie, but I haven’t found someone appropriate for Blaze. I’ve had readers tell me they picture Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson, so hey, whatever works for them!

I love Dwayne Johnson. My mom sat next to him on a plane once, years ago, and she said he was the nicest person. How do you get into your writing zone?

Honestly, there’s no process for me—it just happens! Music and imagery definitely inspire me, but all I have to do is park my butt in front of the computer, start typing, and the words usually come spewing out

I’m a big fan of Spotify or Apple Music playlists, and Pinterest as my inspiration. How about new writers? What advice do you have for fledgling writers?

Write what you love. Seriously. Don’t write for the market, cause it’ll show in your work. It’s easy to tell when an author is passionate about what they’re writing just by small nuances in their stories. And as a reader, I’m more invested and engaged because of it. As for promo, just be yourself, interact with your readers and fellow writers as much as you can, and don’t forget to write the next book!

Awesome advice! Would you mind sharing an excerpt from your latest release?

Valerie kept her eyes locked on the glass windows covered with cigarette prices and beer ads, watching Tattoos pay up at the cash register. Once she reached the side of the building, she pressed her back against the warm brick wall. Sweat trickled down her spine and she wiped her clammy hands on her jeans before she drew her Beretta. She listened for the bell hanging above the store entrance, and when it jingled, she peered past the corner of the building.

There he is.

Holding a pack of Marlboros, he slipped it into his back pocket along with a silver money clip. He walked back toward the Chevelle, scanning the area one more time as he stepped off the concrete elevation.

This is it. Do it. Now!

With her gun pointed at the ground in a two-handed grip, Valerie pushed off the wall and turned the corner, staring at his back. Her voice was loud and clear as she called, “Blaze.”

He stopped and pivoted around. A fleeting expression of confusion filled his face, but it quickly turned into shock as she lifted her gun and shouted, “Freeze, NYPD!”

Gasps and shouts resounded as everyone turned their attention on her. Some people ducked while others gawked, and she wished they would just climb into their cars and get the hell out of here. She did her best to ignore them, keeping her focus solely on the man before her as she carefully approached him. He didn’t make any sudden movements, his brow furrowing as a muscle in his jaw ticked.

Valerie flashed her badge to prove she wasn’t bullshitting. “Get your hands in the air where I can see them.”

He slowly lifted his arms and spread his hands out wide. Then spoke with a voice like black gravel, matching his appearance all too well. “What’s going on here?”

She closed in on him, his presence becoming more and more overwhelming. Sirens resonated in the distance, sending a trickle of relief through her. He didn’t appear armed but that didn’t mean jack.

“Turn around and get down on the ground. Now!”

Anger consumed the confusion on his face but he surprisingly complied, giving her his back again before dropping to his knees with his hands above his head.

She kept her gun aimed and her mind submerged in the well of her calm. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d arrested someone; she usually shot to kill. “Cross your ankles,” she ordered, and he did so, crossing his booted ankles as if he’d done this before.

Valerie placed her foot in the space between his legs, so if he attempted to stand he would end up flat on his face. People finally backed away as she removed her tungsten carbide handcuffs from her utility belt, gripping the Beretta with knuckles white as chalk. Tungsten carbide was the only metal strong enough to hold a vampire, but she used it on everyone, regardless of species. Two New Rochelle cruisers whipped into the gas station, blocking off both exits before four officers leapt out of their respective vehicles. Valerie put the gun up and cuffed Blaze’s dominant hand, swinging his right arm around before latching onto the left.

He didn’t put up a fight. He didn’t even flinch. But he balled his big hands into fists at his back. She read him his Miranda rights as she cinched the cuffs around both of his thick wrists.

“You have the right to remain silent—”

“I have the right to know what’s going on,” he growled, showing her his savage profile.

“Anything you do or say can be used against you in a court of law.”

“What are you arresting me for?”

“You have the right to an attorney.”

“Fuck the attorney—”

She yanked the chain of his cuffs, bringing his solid body against her as the faint scent of cologne tickled her nose. She leaned into his ear, anger flashing through her as she thought of bloody grass and charred flesh.

“You’re under arrest for the murder of Elena Delgado. Now get the fuck up and move.”

Thank you so much for having me, Kim! Hope your readers find me remotely interesting. 😉

The Collector by Nora Roberts

The CollectorThe Collector by Nora Roberts

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Nora Roberts. She’s my spirit animal. This book was enjoyable but I did find myself reading slowly, taking breaks, and picking up other books in between chapters of The Collector. Her heroine was likable, relatable, and charming, while the hero was dominant and sure of what he wanted from the get-go. Overall, I liked the intrigue and the adventure that took center stage in this book.
